Abstract


Ageism is defined, a term coined by Robert Butler in 1969, as the systematic stereotyping and discrimination against people simply because of their age. Healthcare ageism, ie. ageism in healthcare settings and context is also ought to be assessed and addressed in all segments of healthcare system. This review has a focus on the concept of ageism and healthcare ageism, serving to be available to further investigation on this issue. Several dimensions of the ageism in healthcare and following recommendations including the implications for the geriatric education are presented. Of course more research and investigation on many aspects of this topic, it should be noted that old age is a vulnerable time of life cycle, and that the idea or value of patient-centered care has to be realized in the care for the elderly as much as possible.
